Ekosistem startup Indonesia baru benar-benar "menyala" sekitar 2012–2013.
Hasilnya? Pasar tenaga kerja milik developer. Berikut gambaran kasar gaji di era itu:
| Level |
2012–2014 |
2015–2017 |
2018–2019 (Puncak) |
| Junior (0–2 thn) |
4–8 juta |
7–12 juta |
8–15 juta |
| Mid-level (2–5 thn) |
10–18 juta |
15–25 juta |
20–35 juta |
| Senior (5+ thn) |
20–35 juta |
30–55 juta |
45–80 juta |
| Staff Eng / Principal |
— |
60–100 juta |
80–150 juta |
Ratusan startup gulung tikar setelah kehabisan runway.
- 2024 — Gelombang AI tools (GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, Cursor) membuat satu senior developer bisa mengerjakan pekerjaan 3 junior. Demand junior turun drastis.
- 2025–2026 — Pasar kian sesak. Ribuan lulusan bootcamp masuk tiap bulan. Perusahaan semakin selektif dan menekan gaji.
Gambaran gaji saat ini:
| Level |
2023–2026 (Realita) |
Inflasi-adjusted vs 2018 |
| Junior (0–2 thn) |

Mengapa Ini Terjadi? 5 Faktor Utama
1. Ledakan bootcamp dan lulusan IT.
3. AI menggerus kebutuhan junior. Tools seperti GitHub Copilot, Cursor, dan Claude Code membuat satu engineer berpengalaman bisa produktif seperti tim kecil. Perusahaan tidak lagi perlu "junior army".
4. Konsolidasi industri. Merger besar (Tokopedia-TikTok, GoTo) selalu disertai layoffs dan hiring freeze. Posisi yang ada diperebutkan lebih banyak kandidat.
5. Ekspektasi vs realita.
If you've ever talked to a developer who started a career around 2014-2018, you must have heard stories that made you drool: fresh graduates immediately get a salary of 10 million, senior developers are offered 60-80 million a month, even startups are willing to pay for relocation packages and stock options just to secure one good engineer.
Now, the story feels like a fairy tale. Bootcamp and S1 Informatics graduates queue to apply for the same position, for salaries that — after adjusting for inflation — are smaller than 10 years ago. What is it exactly?
Savory Era: 2012-2019
The new Indonesian startup ecosystem really "lit up" around 2012-2013. Go-Jek, Tokopedia, Traveloka, and Bukalapak began to grow fast and needed a large number of engineers. The problem: supply is very limited. A few IT graduates every year, and those with relevant skills (web, mobile, modern backend) are even fewer.
The result? The labor market belongs to developers. Here is a rough overview of salaries in that era:
| Level |
2012-2014 |
2015-2017 |
2018-2019 (Peak) |
| Junior (0-2 yrs) |
4-8 million |
7-12 million |
8-15 million |
| Mid-level (2-5 yrs) |
10-18 million |
15-25 million |
20-35 million |
| Senior (5+ yrs) |
20-35 million |
30-55 million |
45-80 million |
| Eng / Principal Staff |

60-100 million |
80-150 million |
What makes this era "savory" is not only the numbers — but also additional offers: stock options, signing bonuses, equipment allowance, there are even startups that pay apartment rent. Competing offers are common. Developers can resign today and get a new job in a week.
Drag Era: 2023-2026
Then came a series of events that changed everything:
- 2023 — Shopee laid off more than 3,000 employees in Indonesia. GoTo merger and major restructuring. Hundreds of startups went out of business after running out of runways.
- 2024 — Wave AI tools (GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, Cursor) allow one senior developer to do the work of 3 juniors. Junior demand dropped dramatically.
- 2025-2026 — The market is getting crowded. Thousands of bootcamp graduates enter every month. Companies are increasingly selective and pressing for salaries.

Why Did This Happen? 5 Key Factors
1. Bootcamp explosion and IT graduates. Between 2018-2023, dozens of coding bootcamps popped up and graduated thousands of new developers every year. Supply is surging, demand is not offsetting.
2. Startup winter and funding drought. The era of global high interest rates makes VCs much tighter. Startups that used to burn money for hiring are now focusing on profitability and efficiency.
3. AI erodes junior needs. Tools like GitHub Copilot, Cursor, and Claude Code make one experienced engineer as productive as a small team. Companies no longer need "junior army".
4. Industry consolidation. Large mergers (Tokopedia-TikTok, GoTo) are always accompanied by layoffs and hiring freezes. Existing positions are contested for more candidates.
5. Expectations vs. reality. Many candidates enter with expectations of 2019-era salaries, while companies offer far below that. Negotiations are getting tougher.
“Then what should I do?
This condition does not mean that a developer's career is not promising. Truly competent senior developers are still highly sought after and well-paid. The key:
- Don't settle for too long at the junior level. The target rises tomid-level in 18-24 months.
- Master AI tools — not afraid to be replaced by AI, but be a developer who uses AI for 10x productivity.
- Consider remote jobs for overseas companies — the global rate is much higher than the local market.
- Specialization in areas that AI has not been able to replace: system architecture, security, machine learning engineering, and product thinking.
The savory era is indeed past. But developers who continue to learn and are adaptive still have a bright future — with the right strategy.
